Nysse travel card: balance, top-up and where to buy
How to check the balance of the Nysse travel card (Nella), how to load money onto the card, where to get the card and how much it costs — all the travel-card information on one page.
What is the Nysse travel card
The Nysse travel card is the contactless travel card for public transport in the Tampere region, with which you pay for your journeys on all Nysse trams and buses. The card is managed in the Nella service at tampere.nella.fi — there you check the balance, load money and handle registering the card.
You load value, that is money, onto the card, and journeys are charged from it on the reader. The card can also be registered as personal: then the balance can be refunded if the card is lost. The balance of an unregistered card is not refunded.
The tram runs entirely within zones A and B, so when you travel with the card the ticket is always the affordable AB value ticket, which is valid for 90 minutes including transfers between bus and tram.

The travel card in four steps
Get the card
The Nysse travel card costs €6.00 and you can get it from the Nella.fi online service (tampere.nella.fi), a Nysse service point and sales points. The card price does not include any travel value — you load money onto the card separately.
Register the card
You can register the card as personal on Nella.fi or at a service point using Finnish identification. The balance on a personal card can be refunded if the card is lost. An unregistered card works too, but its balance is not refunded if the card goes missing.
Load money
Load value (money) onto the card at sales points in sums of 10, 20 or 30 euros, or on Nella.fi with any amount (at least 10 €). The maximum balance on the card is €120.
Tap the card on the reader
Tap your travel card on the reader in the vehicle every time you board a tram or bus. There is no conductor or ticket sales on the tram — you pay the fare with the card, in the Nysse Mobiili app or with a contactless bank card straight on the reader.
How do I check my travel-card balance
You can check the balance of the Nysse travel card — the money on the card — in three ways:
- From your Nella.fi account. Log in to the service at tampere.nella.fi to see the card balance, loaded tickets and purchase history.
- On the reader in the vehicle. When you tap the card on the reader as you board a tram or bus, the reader shows the remaining balance on its display.
- At a Nysse service point. At a service point you can check the balance and load more money onto the card at the same time.

Where can I buy the travel card
The Nysse travel card costs €6.00. You can get the card from three places, and the same place also handles top-up and registration.
Nella.fi (tampere.nella.fi)
Order the card online and handle the balance, top-up and registration in the same service. You log in with Finnish identification.
Nysse service point
Buy the card, load money and register the card as personal at a service point. Personalisation requires a Finnish personal identity code.
Sales points around Tampere
You can get the card and load it at sales points in sums of 10, 20 or 30 euros. The handiest option when you want the card in your hand right away.
Personal or unregistered
Register the card on Nella.fi or at a service point so the balance is safe if the card is lost. An unregistered card works too, but its balance is not refunded.
The travel card is the cheapest way to pay
The AB value ticket loaded onto the card is the cheapest single ticket on the Tampere tram and buses. Compare the prices:
New in 2026: account-based payment
During 2026 Nysse is moving to an account-based payment system. In practice ticket and customer data move off the physical travel card into a background system, so the card still works as an identifier but the data lives on the account.
The change happens automatically and needs no action from the passenger — your old travel card keeps working normally through the transition. You can carry on checking the balance and topping up on Nella.fi just as before.
Other ways to pay on the tram
There is no conductor selling tickets on the tram. Besides the travel card, you can pay for your journey in several other ways:
Nysse Mobiili
Buy a single ticket or a day ticket in the Nysse Mobiili app. The AB single ticket costs €2.80 and is valid for 90 min.
Bank card on the reader
Pay with a contactless bank card straight on the reader in the vehicle — you get an AB single ticket for €2.80. Tap the same card every time you board.
The cheapest value ticket
With value loaded onto the card the single ticket is only €2.50 — the cheapest option for regular travel.
